Founded in 1784 under the choice of the Gran Duke Pietro Leopoldo di Lorena. The gallery, now famous for the statue of the David by Michelangelo, brought there from his previous location in Piazza della Signoria either to preserve it and to celebrate the 4th centenary of the artist's birth, houses a vaste collection of statues, sculptures and paintings of illustrious artists such as Giambologna, Ghirlandaio, Andrea Del Sarto, Perugino, Paolo Uccello and many others in addition to other halls housing authors of the XII, the XIII and the XVIII century. The Grand Duke also decided to include among the arts protected in this way, a conservatory of music (the Cherubini Conservatory).
